Jap dinner feast!

My friend decided to whip up the same japanese dinner again. He invited me to help out and feast in!

We went Meidi-ya again to stock up on the groceries! We decided to apply for Meidi-ya membership since like to frequent there often. Its only 2 bucks. But 500 points can only get u $5 voucher. Abit pathetic. Hees.

I coated the cutlet with bread crumbs. Wee!

Golden brown chicken cutlet!

This time we gonna add in extra ingredients to our Gyu Don. All prepared. Ready to start!!

While the chef cooks, the assistance scoop the rice and waits.

DSC01213
DIG IN!! Tastes so much better with the combinations of the vegetables and 'Dong Fen'.

Carrot Chips!

Had something interesting some time back. Its carrot cake cut into strips like french fries and then deep fried.

Carrot cake is 1 of the good option as breakfast. I love the crust of the carrot cake. So cutting carrot cake into chips means I get to eat more crust then the cake itself! Sinful manz! But i think its a clever idea!

The best part..... for just $1, you can get 10 chips! More than enuff for breakfast for a single person.

You can find this in some Cooked Food store in a Hawker Centre near Lavendar MRT station. The hawker is near the canal.

Yakitori @ Kazu!

Yes! It's yakitori time again! This time, I got to try out the other place @ Cuppage Plaza! It's called Kazu, located at the 4th storey.

This place comes highly recommended from blogs and also from fwens who have been there before. You are recommended to make reservations and really early to have a place over there. We called ard 4 and the only time slots left for a party for 6 was like 6pm or 8.15pm. Thank goodness we were all not hungry tht day and opt for the later slot.

There were indeed much more varieties offered over here compared to Kushingen. Also, they have loads more other food to offer besides yakitoris.

We went ahead for a yakitori feast.

Bewarned of the overload of photos ahead! I might have some difficulties naming some of the items in the photos. Pardon me. Hees!

IMG_8760
We were served Cabbage (I always have this difficulties differentiating btw cabbage and lettuce. So correct me if i'm wrong) and a special sauce to dig it in. We all love the sauce. I believe its made from miso. And the cabbage acts as a refreshing appetiser.

I think the purpose of the cabbage was to act as a distraction during the waiting time. They were so packed. It took quite a while for them to take our orders and also to serve our food. So clever! Else, the restaurent will be filled with loads of hungry angry customers.

IMG_8768
My Sweets got bored with waiting and decided to take an "artistic' shot. Geez!

IMG_8773
First dish! Let me think. I think its pork belly on the left. Beef on the right. Hees! Think the beef i had @ Kushin was better, but it was a different type so i guess i cant really compare.

IMG_8775
This is something Kushingen did not have! Pork wrapped golden mushroom! I adore golden mushroom! YUMZ!!

IMG_8777
Chicken heart & Chicken liver! 2 items that I normally do not eat! Jus try! Still did not like the taste of liver. Heart still ok!

IMG_8779
Pork wrapped asparagus. To me, I feel not much difference. US beef. A different texture i feel. Quite yumz leh! Then later, we realise its ox tongue which explains the difference in texture. MMmmm.... OX tongue...I like

IMG_8780
Scallop. QUite nice leh i feel. But Sweets sae the scallop not sweet enuff leh.

IMG_8782
Authentic japanese Cha Soba like downstairs. Half of us seems to still prefer Sushi's Tei cha soba. Haha!

IMG_8787
Sweets love this pic he took! Fish Liver! SUPER SUPER HEAVENLY!!! this is from a person (ME!) who hates liver!! Haha!

IMG_8792
But i think the pic i took nicer!! hehehe!

IMG_8790
Fishy Fishy! So pretty! But i dun rem if i ate it!

IMG_8789
MIxed tempura. Oiishi.. but photo blur.. :(

IMG_8794
On the left is some meatball like thing which i like. The other is pork wrapped avocado.

IMG_8795
Lamb Chops & Pork Belly + Garlic. Love the lamb. I still cannot forget the pork belly with garlic i had at Kushingen.

IMG_8797
Chicken Wings! Yums!!!

IMG_8801
Shitake Mushroom! I love mushrooms!

IMG_8803
Ox tongue (Japan). TOo chewy for my liking

IMG_8804
Brinjal. I dun eat brinjal. The rest saes its really sweet and good!

IMG_8805
Duck. Too ducky. Not so nice.

IMG_8806
Black Pork! Hehe! Nice!!!

IMG_8807
Foie Gras. Yx had this when she was here previously and raved about this!!! Now I noe why she cant stop toking abt it. It kinda melts in your mouth.HEee!!

IMG_8809
Lastly! Soft shell crab! i like this. Not oily like those normal jap restaurent. Only thing.. no crab roe. Hee!

IMG_8811
We are done for the night!!!

IMG_8812
Ended the night with some ice cream. Caramel ice cream. There's a bit burnt taste which i dun like. Sweets loved it!

Overall experience, we love this place. The food it serves is of good quality! Except that, we believe item comparison wise, the one at kushigen was nicer. But it has more varieties to offer.
However, the waiting time was really long! We took like 3 hours to finish our meal!! Sweets and I were suppose to catch a movie, already booked the tickets. But we decided in the end, there's no pt in rushing and decide to forsake the movie.

We thank for this wonderful treat!! Totally worth missing our movie!

Meidi-ya & our little jap feast

Really quite sad that the pics for this entry will be kinda disappointing. It's about time for me to get a new camera phone. The pics always turn out kinda awful when there's bad lighting. Will love to have my camera with me 24/7 but jus too lazy!

Was waiting for my frn to pick me up from work but he was late and i ended early. So decided to go to my favourite supermarket to have a stroll! hehe! Then he smsed me to "sun bian" buy something from there to cook for dinner.

I love looking at the wide selection of fresh beef offered there! N then I found a packet of thinly sliced beef with sauce to make yakiniku don! I was so excited and grabbed that immediatly. I also picked out the pork to make katsu for it look so tempting and yummy!!! I really like the way they actually seperate the different cut of meat for different cooking purpose, like they actually list out the meat for bbq, sukiyaki and even for jap curry! Also, picked up bread crumbs for my katsu and our fav portabello mushrooms.

DSC01190
Woo! From the price tag, its call 'GYU DON' but it seems like 'Yakiniku Don' we order from restaurent too leh! Wonder whats the difference! To simplify, its 'Beef Bowl'! Ha!

DSC01192
Ignore the bad photography. Dun they look jus tempting?! HA!

DSC01194

DSC01193
Our Katsu! To be honest, Meat feels kinda tough to me too! haha! maybe its the way its suppose to be!

DSC01195
Our shrivelled up portabello mushrooms! Cooked in olive oil on the pan!

DSC01196
Our 'GYU' don!!! Again ignore the bad picture quality! I think it was pretty good!! Maybe because he is a good cook! But still! Yumz! Because the beef is so fresh!!! the sauce abit too sweet though! think we will have to do abit of modification in future! But high chance of buying it to cook it again! We already planned to complement it with golden mushrooms and 'dong fen' the next time round! It will be like the one that I had back in Melbourne!

We were stuffed crazy! too much food for 2 pple! Not cheap! But still! Worth it!

I wan to be a rich woman and shop Meidi-ya for my groceries in future! Haha! I gonna work doubly hard to earn for my food!!

Tom Ton

Finally got a chance to meet up with my ex-colleague, Selina for lunch! This gal is freaking busy all the time, from 'Working from home'. "GRRR~~" So unfair! haha!

Anyway, manage to convince her to meet me at Central to try out the restaurent, 'TomTon'. I have heard loads about the black pig's cutlet served from this place. I was pretty excited. I have heard abt black pig from some anime that Selina has loan me previously! Haha! She could relate to my excitedness over this meal!

However, the pork katsu was pretty pricey compared to normal pork katsu we have from japanese restaurents. I regret not ordering the premium cut pork katsu cause my fwen yx said it was heavenly! I think i had the loin cut. Both of us thot the meat was pretty tough but the breaded crust was really nice. I must admit though, the part with the fats was absolutely heavenly! haha!

I guess I had too high an expectation. I thot it will invoke a emotional reaction like that seen in the anime. haha! Anyway, I think I will give this another try! Try out the premium cut suggested by my fwen the next time round!

For those interested to try out black pig katsu (or black pig spicy ramen),
can check out their webbie:

Matcha redbean swissroll.

Will like to recommend this Marcha redbean swissroll that i love. THjie first recommended it to me. I love the combination of the greentea sponge cake, the sweet red beans and the creamy cream. Mmm! a nice and light dessert! and not too sweet!

DSC01170

I bought it today while I was at Meidi-ya. It has been a while since i last had it. But, I totally forgot abt it and left it at BC's place. :(. Cant stop thinking abt it now. *Craves*

You can also get it from Takashimaya's basement 2 food area. Its a small cake shop in between the BeardPapa and the Dairy-something place. Haha!

SuperDog

Met a colleague at Vivocity the other day for lunch. She suggested that we try out SuperDog. She had heard raves about it from her friend and wanted to try it out. Y not? I love to eat hotdogs too! N i got pretty sick of eating hawker and foodcourt's food.

DSC01166
I had fun reading the hotdog eating etiquette printed on the tray paper. Pretty nonsense stuffs! The serving concept is pretty much like Mos burger. U take a number and then they will serve the food to u later. Kinda enjoy the lemon tea. pretty good.

DSC01167
I had the bacon chilli dog. Absolute Yumz! Taste kinda like coney dog from A&W last time. The fries was nice and crispy. Pretty similar to that they have at LJS (Long John).

DSC01168
A close up on my hotdog! Loads of onions. Better not have it before a date! hees! But i think its pretty pricey place for hotdogs! The pricing is nearly as much as that of carl's Jr. But at carl's, you end up with a burger that can feed two accompanied with free flow of drinks. Suggested for days when you feel rich!

DSC01169
My lunch kaki's german frankfurt or something. Strange thing is that it was served on a baguette. For hotdogs, both of us still prefer it to be on a hotdog bun.

A satisfying meal! :) I really wanna try its chilli cheese fries the next time round! Saw some1 had it. Look like absolutely delicious and sinful!

D-I-Y Yakitori

Could not forget the delicious Yakitori we had at Kushigin last weekend. Since we had nothing important on this weekend, we decided to experiment some yakitori ourselves.

We initially wanted to try out jus the pork belly and chicken skin, the 2 more unforgettable yakitoris that we had. We ended up with even more items in the end. We are jus so greedy.

Went to Meidi-ya to shop around for our ingredients and at the same time, have a great time exploring it out. Love this place for its wondrous selection of fresh meat and sashimi. TH and Gary always come here to shop for ingredients whenever we have steamboats or sashimi dinners. Absolutely good!!

I was so tempted by the wide selection of wagyu beef there!! They even have pork that had marbled fats like wagyu beef there too!! We wanted to get that for our pork belly yakitori but it cost like 10 plus compared to the 2 plus normal pork! We decided to get the cheaper one since we are jus experimenting this time round. hees!

Back home, its time to get down to work. (the pics were taken by my handphone, pardon the bad lighting and quality)

We started first on the pork belly. We seasoned the pork belly with jus salt and pepper. It was really hard work to poke the fatty pork into the satay sticks. We even poked our own fingers couple of times. Haf way through it, we decided that paying that kind of price that night was totally worth it. Our yakitori does not look as pretty as theirs, the size of their pork and garlic were so rectangular and uniformed. Ours looked more like satays and its sure wasnt easy work.

DSC01175

Next, we started work on the shitake mushrooms. Mushrooms were defintely much easier than the pork belly. Jus sprinkle with pepper and salt, its all set!

DSC01174

N after that, it was time for pork asparagus! I told my frn tat the asparagus was wrapped with very thinly sliced pork. His mum and him insisted that the asparagus was dipped into meat paste for its impossible to get such thinly sliced pork and all wrapped round the asparagus so evenly. In the end, we went ahead with the meat paste method. We made meat paste using pork and garlic and spread it evenly around the asparagus on the stick. Looks similar. But wierd to me. Ha!

DSC01176

We bbqed the pork asparagus with a bit of teriyaki sauce. It was delicious and the asparagus was nicely done like we had at the restaurent. TH agreed with me that the asparagus was individually wrapped with pork but we love our own version jus as much! hehe!!

DSC01181

Our yakitori feast! If u noticed, we also prepared chicken skin and beef cubes. both seasoned jus with pepper and salt. To our disappointment, our pork belly totally pales in comparison to the one we had at the restaurent. But our chicken skin and beef cubes were tasted good enuff to us. The skin was nice and crispy and the beef was juicy and tender.

DSC01179

Our conclusion: the price we paid for restaurent's yakitori was worth it. We are paying for the quality, the time and the effort in preparing the delicious yakitoris. Next time we have cravings for yakitori, we should just to a restaurent. But we did had loads of fun.
